While the surface is still warm, the display swaps between the hot-surface indicator and the error code. That alternation only tells you the glass is hot.

Once the glass is clear and clean and the pot is right, the manuals offer nothing further to owners. In the PE-series manual, codes beginning with ER relate to the hob as a whole.
